This is a very interesting piece of
carpentry tool, the design and use of which can be dated back as early as the
1600’s.
This is an old style Carpenters gauge
these types of tools have been around for hundreds of years and the basic
principles of the tool are still in use today.
Although we cannot say how old this tool
is exactly it does appear to be old and made from a maple or birch wood.
The Gauge is about 12 inches long and has
a block of wood that slides up and down the length of the piece which can be
set at any position down the length by a separate wedge that locks the block
into place.
This allowed Carpenters to mark/score
parallel lines down pieces of wood prior to cutting.
The gauge does show signs of use but has
obviously been looked after over all these years.
